Chapter Five · Succedent house

The Fifth House

Nati: children

The house of children and of pleasure. It covers creativity, romance, entertainment, games and speculation, everything done for the joy of it.

For the joy of it

Some things you do because you have to: earn a living, keep house, answer the post. Others you do simply because you want to. You paint, or sing, or play five-a-side on a Thursday. You fall in love. You have children, and spend years watching them become themselves. You place a bet on the Grand National, throw a party, take a weekend away for no reason at all.

Astrology gathers all of this into one house.

The Fifth House is the house of pleasure and creation: children, romance, creativity, play, and everything done for the joy of it.

It follows the Fourth House, below the western horizon. Where the Fourth House is your roots, the Fifth is what grows from them: the next generation, and the things you bring into the world yourself. The Greek astrologers called it Good Fortune, and it is one of the happiest places in the chart.

What the Fifth House rules

Category What the Fifth House covers
Life areas Children, pregnancy, pleasure, romance, creativity, self-expression, play, entertainment
The body The heart, stomach, liver, sides and back
People Children, lovers, sweethearts, playmates, entertainers
Things Gifts, games, theatres, parties, places of pleasure; in modern astrology hobbies and the arts
Events Births, love affairs, holidays, celebrations, speculation and gambling, performances

Children

The oldest and most constant meaning of the Fifth House is children. Traditional astrologers looked here for whether a person would have children, how many, and how they would fare. Modern astrologers add the relationship with your children and your experience of being a parent. The house also covers pregnancy and, by extension, anything you bring into being.

Pleasure and romance

The Fifth is the house of enjoyment: feasting, drinking, parties, games, entertainment and the pleasures of the senses. It covers romance and love affairs, especially the early, playful stage of love, as distinct from the commitment of marriage, which belongs to the Seventh.

Creativity and self-expression

Modern astrologers make the Fifth the house of creativity: art, music, writing for pleasure, performance, and any activity in which you express yourself and make something new. Children and creative works are both things you bring into the world, which is why the two meanings sit so easily together.

Play and risk

The Fifth also covers sport, games, hobbies and recreation, and the pleasures of taking a chance: gambling, speculation and risky investments.

The common thread

Everything here is done for its own sake, or comes from you and goes out into the world. The First House is the self; the Fifth is what the self creates and enjoys.

The Fifth House through history

The general story of the houses is told in A Short History of the Houses. This section follows the Fifth House's own part in it.

Good Fortune

The Greek astrologers called the fifth place Good Fortune, and it was the place where Venus rejoiced. Directly opposite, the eleventh place was the Good Spirit, where Jupiter rejoiced. So the two benefics faced each other across the chart, each in one of the two most fortunate succedent places. The fifth place could see the rising sign by trine, the most harmonious of the aspects, which helped explain its good reputation.

Children were its central meaning from the start, together with the good things that come unbidden: gifts, pleasures and good luck.

Nati

In the medieval Latin memory rhyme the Fifth House is nati, children, literally "those who are born". As with the other houses, the rhyme picks the meaning astrologers thought of first.

William Lilly

Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) gives the Fifth House children; the state of a woman with child; banquets, ale-houses, taverns, plays and messengers or agents; and the wealth of the father, because the Fifth is the second house counted from the Fourth (a technique explained in the section on derived houses below). For the body he gives the stomach, liver, heart, sides and back, and for its colour a mixture of black and white. He names Venus as the planet that joys here.

The modern Fifth House

Twentieth-century astrology kept children and pleasure and added creativity and self-expression as central meanings. The Fifth became the house of the inner child, of play, art, performance and romance, the place where you express who you are for the pleasure of it. Many modern books pair it with Leo and the Sun; this book keeps houses and signs separate, as explained in A Short History of the Houses.

What has survived

Children, pleasure and good fortune have stayed with the Fifth House for two thousand years. The modern emphasis on creativity grew naturally from them: children are the first and oldest of the things a person creates.

Where the Fifth House sits

Rising from the foot of the chart

The Fifth House lies just after the Fourth, below the horizon in the western half of the chart. With whole sign houses it is the fourth sign on from the rising sign: Libra rising gives an Aquarius Fifth House, Aries rising a Leo one, and so on.

It sits in the lower half (private life) and the western half (other people). Children, lovers and playmates are among the first people outside the family home that most of us give ourselves to.

A succedent house

The Fifth is succedent: it follows the angle of the Fourth. If the Fourth House is the foundation, the Fifth is what grows from it. Planets here are moderately strong, and in this case well disposed, since the Fifth was one of the two most fortunate succedent places.

A trine to the First House

The Fifth is four signs from the rising sign, a trine, which the Greek astrologers counted the most harmonious relationship of all. So the Fifth House is in easy contact with the self: pleasure, creativity and children tend to support the person rather than drain them. This, together with the joy of Venus, is why the Fifth was called Good Fortune.

The partner: the Eleventh House

Directly opposite lies the Eleventh House: friends, groups, allies, patrons and hopes. The axis between them pairs the two fortunate places, the joys of Venus and Jupiter, and it is the axis of personal joy and shared hopes. The Fifth is what you create and enjoy for yourself; the Eleventh is what you build with and for other people. A love affair belongs to the Fifth, a friendship to the Eleventh; a solo performance to the Fifth, a club or society to the Eleventh.

When one house of the pair is empty and the other is full, as in this chapter's worked example, the full side often speaks for both.

The twelve signs on the Fifth House

The sign on the Fifth House describes how you play, love, create and relate to children. With whole sign houses it is always the fourth sign after your rising sign, so each entry names the rising sign that produces it.

These are symbolic tendencies, not predictions about whether or how many children you will have. Read the sign with any planets in the house and with its ruler.

Sagittarius rising. You play to win. Pleasure is active and competitive: sport, adventure, quick romances and bold creative projects. In love you are ardent and direct, and with children energetic and encouraging.

  • Watch-outs: gambling on luck, and restlessness in love.

  • Ruler: Jupiter.

Capricorn on the Fifth House

In love you are cautious and loyal; responsibilities toward children are taken to heart, and enjoyment often grows with age.

  • Strengths: discipline in creative work, loyalty, lasting achievement.

  • Watch-outs: inhibition, and treating play as work.

  • Ruler: Saturn.

Aquarius on the Fifth House

Libra rising, as in this book's example chart. Pleasure is unconventional and often shared with groups. • Strengths: originality, friendship in love, inventive creativity.

  • Watch-outs: detachment in romance, and a reluctance to commit.

  • Ruler: Saturn in traditional astrology; Uranus in modern astrology.

  • Strengths: imagination, compassion, artistic sensitivity.

  • Watch-outs: idealising lovers, and escaping into pleasure.

  • Ruler: Jupiter in traditional astrology; Neptune in modern astrology.

Planets in the Fifth House

A planet in the Fifth House expresses itself through pleasure, creativity, romance and children. Because the house is succedent and trine to the Ascendant, its planets tend to act comfortably and in support of the person. The benefics and malefics are explained in Chapter One.

The Sun in the Fifth House

The Sun here makes self-expression central to identity. You come alive when creating, performing, playing or in love, and you may be proud of your children or devoted to creative work. You want what you make to carry your signature.

  • At its best: creativity, warmth, natural leadership in play.

  • Under strain: needing an audience, and taking creative criticism personally.

  • Tradition: a luminary in a good succedent place, read as pleasure, honour through children, and a love of display.

The Moon in the Fifth House

The Moon here links feeling with pleasure and children. You need fun, affection and creative outlets to feel secure, and you may be strongly attached to children, or long for them. Romance is emotional and changeable.

  • At its best: tenderness, playfulness, an instinct for nurturing.

  • Under strain: moodiness in love, and seeking comfort in pleasure.

  • Tradition: traditionally a sign of fertility and of many pleasures.

Mercury in the Fifth House

Mercury here makes the mind playful. You enjoy games, puzzles, wordplay, writing for pleasure and lively conversation, and romance may begin with wit. You may teach children or write for them.

  • At its best: creative intelligence, humour, communication with children.

  • Under strain: flirtation without depth, and scattered hobbies.

  • Tradition: neutral; takes its colour from the planets it is joined to.

Venus in the Fifth House

Venus is in its place of joy here, one of its happiest positions. Love, pleasure, art and beauty come easily; you are charming, affectionate and artistic, and life tends to offer many good things. Romance is important and often sweet.

  • At its best: artistic talent, happy love affairs, joy in children.

  • Under strain: self-indulgence, and pleasure-seeking.

  • Tradition: Venus rejoices here, and the old texts read it as a strong sign of love, pleasure and children.

Mars in the Fifth House

Mars here makes play competitive and love passionate. You enjoy sport, risk and adventure, and you pursue love ardently. Creative work is energetic and bold. Arguments with children or lovers are possible.

  • At its best: courage, passion, energetic creativity.

  • Under strain: rash romance, reckless gambling, and quarrels.

  • Tradition: a malefic in the house of children, read as rash pleasures and trouble through lovers or children. Less harsh in a night chart.

Jupiter in the Fifth House

Jupiter here brings abundance to pleasure, creativity and children. You are generous, fun-loving and optimistic, and may have a large family, many creative projects, or great enjoyment of life. Luck in speculation is traditional, though not guaranteed.

  • At its best: generosity, joy, good fortune through children and creative work.

  • Under strain: excess, over-indulgence and over-confident gambling.

  • Tradition: the greater benefic in a fortunate place, and Jupiter is also the natural significator of children; one of the classic signs of children and good fortune.

Saturn in the Fifth House

Saturn here makes pleasure serious and creativity disciplined. You may find it hard to relax or to play freely, especially when young, and you may take your responsibilities to children very seriously, or come to parenthood late. Creative work, though, can be deeply crafted and enduring.

  • At its best: discipline, loyalty in love, mature and lasting creative achievement.

  • Under strain: inhibition, guilt about pleasure, and burdens through children.

  • Tradition: the greater malefic in the house of children, read as few children, delays, or sorrow through them, especially in a night chart. Modern astrologers emphasise responsibility and slow, solid creativity instead.

Uranus in the Fifth House

Uranus, a modern addition, makes pleasure, love and creativity unconventional and sudden. You may fall in and out of love quickly, enjoy unusual hobbies, create original or experimental work, and have an independent relationship with children.

  • At its best: originality, excitement, inventive creativity.

  • Under strain: unstable romance, and restlessness in pleasure.

  • Tradition: none.

Neptune in the Fifth House

Neptune, a modern addition, makes pleasure and love dreamy and idealistic. You may be drawn to music, film, poetry or dance, idealise lovers or children, and pour imagination into creative work.

  • At its best: artistic inspiration, compassion, romantic imagination.

  • Under strain: disillusionment in love, and escapism.

  • Tradition: none.

Pluto in the Fifth House

Pluto, a modern addition, makes pleasure, love and creativity intense and transforming. Love affairs may be all-consuming, creative work may be a matter of life and death to you, and relationships with children may be powerful.

  • At its best: creative power, passionate commitment, regeneration through creativity.

  • Under strain: obsession in love, and power struggles with children or lovers.

  • Tradition: none.

The Lunar Nodes

A Node in the Fifth House always means the other Node is in the Eleventh, so these entries are about the balance between personal joy and shared hopes.

North Node in the Fifth House

The direction of growth is toward personal creativity, romance and play. You may be used to belonging to groups and serving shared causes, and life asks you to express yourself as an individual and enjoy life for its own sake.

  • Modern reading: growth through creative self-expression, with group belonging (the South Node in the Eleventh) as the comfortable habit.

  • Medieval reading: an increase in children and pleasures.

South Node in the Fifth House

Self-expression and pleasure come easily. With the North Node in the Eleventh, growth lies in friendship, community and working toward goals shared with others.

  • Modern reading: growth through friends and causes, with personal pleasure as the comfortable habit.

  • Medieval reading: a diminishing point in the house of children.

The ruler of the Fifth House

The planet that rules the sign on the Fifth House shows where your pleasures, creativity, romances and children lead. This book uses the classical rulers, with the modern ruler of Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces as a second opinion. From the Fifth House, the four houses that cannot see it are the Fourth, Sixth, Tenth and Twelfth.

The Fifth House beyond the birth chart

Natural significators

  • Jupiter is the traditional natural significator of children, and of good fortune generally.

  • Venus, which rejoices in the Fifth, is the natural significator of pleasure, love and the arts.

Derived houses

The Fifth House is a good place to introduce derived houses, one of the eight steps on the contents page. Any house can be treated as a new First House, and the houses counted on from it.

  • The Fifth is your children's First House, so the Sixth is their Second House (their money), the Seventh their Third (their siblings), and so on.

  • Counted from the Fourth House, the father, the Fifth is the second house: the father's money. That is why Lilly lists "the wealth of the father" under the Fifth.

  • Counted from the Seventh House, the partner, the Fifth is the eleventh house: the partner's friends.

Derived houses let astrologers read the lives of other people through one chart. They are used most in horary astrology, where every person in the question needs a house.

Horary astrology

In a horary chart the Fifth House covers children and pregnancy; love affairs; pleasures, parties and gambling; and, in Lilly's time, messengers and agents. Typical questions are "Am I pregnant?", "Will this romance go anywhere?" and "Will this bet pay off?"

Mundane astrology

In charts for nations, the Fifth House covers the birth rate, children and schools, entertainment, the arts, sport, theatres and places of pleasure, and speculation on the stock market.

Electional astrology

When choosing a time to open a theatre, launch a creative work, hold a celebration, or try for a child, electional astrologers strengthen the Fifth House and its ruler, and look for a well-placed Venus or Jupiter.

When the Fifth House switches on

The timing methods are explained in Chapter One. Here they are applied to the Fifth House.

Profection years

The Fifth House is activated in the year beginning on your birthday at these ages:

4, 16, 28, 40, 52, 64, 76, 88

In those years children, romance, creativity and pleasure come to the fore. In the example chart, with Aquarius on the Fifth, the lord of the year is Saturn.

Transits through the Fifth House

  • Jupiter (about a year): a time of enjoyment, romance, creative success and, traditionally, the birth of children.

  • Saturn (about two and a half years): serious creative work, responsibility for children, or a time when pleasure takes a back seat.

  • Uranus (about seven years): sudden romances, new creative directions, and surprises involving children.

  • Neptune (about fourteen years): romantic idealism, artistic inspiration, and sometimes disillusionment.

  • Pluto (twelve to thirty years): deep transformation in love, creativity and relationships with children.

The example chart through the years

In the 1955 Bangor chart the Fifth House is Aquarius, and it is empty. But directly opposite, in Leo in the Eleventh, sit Uranus, Jupiter and Pluto. So every slow planet crossing Aquarius also opposes those three, and the Fifth House's timing is felt across the whole axis.

Uranus, Neptune and now Pluto have crossed this Fifth Housesince 1995: time each slow planet spent in Aquarius, with the profection years19601970198019902000201020202030Profection yearsProfection year, age 44Profection year, age 1616Profection year, age 2828Profection year, age 4040Profection year, age 5252Profection year, age 6464JupiterJupiter in Aquarius, 1961 to 1962Jupiter in Aquarius, 1973 to 1974Jupiter in Aquarius, 1985 to 1986Jupiter in Aquarius, 1997 to 1998Jupiter in Aquarius, 2009 to 2010Jupiter in Aquarius, 2020 to 2021SaturnSaturn in Aquarius, 1962 to 1964Saturn in Aquarius, 1991 to 1994Saturn in Aquarius, 2020 to 2023UranusUranus in Aquarius, 1995 to 2003NeptuneNeptune in Aquarius, 1998 to 2012PlutoPluto in Aquarius, 2023 to 2026
Calculated with astronomy-engine 2.1.19 for the example chart; dates accurate to within a few days. Short retrograde gaps are merged. Pluto remains in Aquarius.
  • Saturn was in Aquarius from 1962 to 1964 (ages 6 to 9), 1991 to 1994 (35 to 38) and 2020 to 2023 (64 to 67), each time opposing Jupiter and Pluto near the end of its stay: in 1964, 1993 to 1994 and 2023.

  • Uranus was in Aquarius from 1995 to 2003, ages 39 to 48. It opposed its own natal position between February and December 1996, at ages 40 and 41, the point often called the Uranus opposition or half-return, in the same year as the age-40 profection year for this house. It then opposed Pluto and Jupiter in 2002 and 2003.

  • Neptune was in Aquarius from 1998 to 2012, ages 42 to 56, opposing Uranus in 1999 and Pluto and Jupiter between 2010 and 2012.

  • Pluto entered Aquarius in 2023 and has been there for good since November 2024. It opposed natal Uranus between February and December 2025, at ages 69 and 70, and will stay in Aquarius until the early 2040s.

An astrologer would mark the year from late 1995 to late 1996 as a key year for the Fifth House: the profection year at 40 and Uranus's opposition to itself fall together. And with Pluto now in Aquarius, the Fifth House is active again in the present: a long period in which creativity, pleasure and what the person brings into the world are expected to change deeply.

Worked example: Bangor, 16 November 1955

The example chart is the one used throughout the book: 03:00 GMT on 16 November 1955, Bangor, Libra rising, a night chart. Like the Fourth, its Fifth House is empty. But this time the house opposite is crowded, and that changes how we read it.

Step 1: the sign on the house

With Libra rising, the Fifth House is Aquarius. Aquarius on the Fifth suggests pleasures that are unconventional and shared with groups, creativity that is original or experimental, and a need for friendship and freedom in love.

Step 2: planets in the house

There are none, under whole sign houses or Placidus. As in Chapter Four, the house is read through its ruler and significators. But first, look across the chart.

Step 3: the partner house

Directly opposite, the Eleventh House (Leo) holds three planets: Uranus at 2°18′, Pluto at 28°33′ and Jupiter at 29°54′. All three oppose the Fifth House by sign. When one house of an axis is empty and the other full, the full house tends to speak for both: here, personal pleasure and creativity are drawn toward friends, groups, audiences and shared hopes. You might say this person's fun happens in company, and their creative work is aimed at a public.

Step 4: the ruler and where it sits

Aquarius has two rulers to consider, and in this chart they point in different directions.

  • Classical ruler: Saturn, at 23°42′ Scorpio in the Second House. So the ruler of the 5th is in the 2nd: creativity and pleasure are linked with money, and creative work may become a source of income. The Second can see the Fifth by square, a working but tense contact. Saturn makes it serious: pleasure is taken seriously, creative work is disciplined and slow to mature, and responsibilities toward children, if any, are carried with care. Saturn is also the Fourth House ruler, so the Fourth and Fifth Houses share one ruler: home and creative life run through the same channel.

  • Modern ruler: Uranus, at 2°18′ Leo in the Eleventh House, directly opposite its own house, retrograde. A modern astrologer would read creativity as original, independent and aimed at groups and audiences. Uranus sextiles the Ascendant within about 1°, so this streak is in easy contact with the self.

The two rulers give a fair summary of the chart's tension: Saturn wants pleasure earned and creativity disciplined; Uranus wants it free, sudden and original.

Step 5: the condition of the ruler

As Chapters Two and Four found, Saturn is neutral by sign, contrary to sect in a night chart, combust in the Sun's rays, and square Pluto within 6°. It is a ruler that works hard and does not show off.

Step 6: natural significators

  • Venus, which rejoices in the Fifth, sits in Sagittarius in the Third House, alongside the Moon. The Third can see the Fifth by sextile. Pleasure and love are found in words, conversation and everyday connection.

  • Jupiter, the natural significator of children and good fortune, sits in the Eleventh, opposite the Fifth, in its own place of joy. It can see the Fifth across the axis, so its good fortune reaches the house directly.

Step 7: derived houses

Counted from the Fourth (the father), the Fifth is the father's Second House: the father's money. The ruler of both is Saturn, in the native's own Second. Traditionally, an astrologer might read the family's money and the native's money as closely bound together.

Step 8: timing

The profection years are 4, 16, 28, 40, 52, 64 and 76, with Saturn as lord of the year. The key year is from late 1995 to late 1996, when the age-40 profection year coincided with Uranus, the modern ruler, opposing itself from inside this house. Pluto is in Aquarius now.

Putting it together

Pleasure, creativity and romance are lived largely in company: through friends, groups and audiences (an empty Fifth House facing a crowded Eleventh). Creative work tends to be original and independent in style (Aquarius, Uranus) but disciplined and slow to mature in practice (Saturn), and it is linked to how the person earns (the ruler in the Second). Love and pleasure are expressed most naturally through words and conversation (Venus in the Third). The house switches on strongly around 40, and again now, with Pluto in Aquarius.

What this example adds

Chapter Four showed how to read an empty house through its ruler. This chapter adds two more tools: look at the partner house, because a crowded opposite can speak for an empty house; and, when a sign has both a classical and a modern ruler, read both and say which is which. In this chart the two rulers disagree, and the disagreement is the most useful part of the reading.
