Friends and good fortune
The Tenth House is your career. The Eleventh is what it earns you: not the money, which belongs to the Second, but the friends, the contacts, the patrons, the people who put in a good word. It is the colleague who becomes a mate, the club you join, the choir, the WhatsApp group, the society that meets on the second Tuesday of the month in the back room of the pub.
It is also the house of what you hope for. Not the daily to-do list, but the wish for how things might turn out.
The Eleventh House is the house of friends and hopes: friendship, groups and networks, allies and benefactors, and the hopes and wishes you hold for the future.
It sits high in the chart, just after the Midheaven. The Greek astrologers called it the Good Spirit and the place where Jupiter rejoices, and counted it one of the best places of all. Where the Fifth House across the chart is what you enjoy for yourself, the Eleventh is what you share with others and build together.
What the Eleventh House rules
| Category | What the Eleventh House covers |
|---|---|
| Life areas | Friendship, groups and networks, alliances, support and patronage, hopes and wishes, good fortune |
| The body | The calves and ankles |
| People | Friends, allies, patrons and benefactors, members of the same group, supporters; in Lilly's day the king's courtiers and counsellors |
| Things | Clubs, societies, associations, networks, causes, the money that comes from a career |
| Events | Making friends, joining groups, receiving help or favours, hopes realised or disappointed |
Friends
The Eleventh is the house of friendship: the people you choose to spend time with, on equal terms, for no reason except that you like them. Family belongs to the Fourth and partners to the Seventh; friends are the Eleventh House's own.
Groups and networks
Modern astrologers extend the house to any group you belong to: clubs, societies, teams, political and charitable causes, professional bodies, online communities. It describes how you fit into a group, and what you give to it and get from it.
Allies and benefactors
Traditionally the Eleventh was the house of benefacta, the good things that come to you through others: patrons, supporters, people in power who favour you. Because it is the second house counted from the Tenth, it is also the reward of the career: the income and goodwill that a profession brings.
Hopes and wishes
The Eleventh is the house of hope: what you want for the future, and whether you are likely to get it. In horary astrology, a question that begins "Will I get my wish?" goes here.
The common thread
Everything here comes from other people freely, by choice and goodwill rather than by blood, contract or duty. The Fifth House is what you create and enjoy; the Eleventh is what you share and hope for with others.
The Eleventh House through history
The general story of the houses is told in A Short History of the Houses. This section follows the Eleventh House's own part in it.
The Good Spirit
The Greek astrologers called the eleventh place the Good Spirit (agathos daimōn) and gave it to Jupiter as its joy. Directly opposite, the fifth place was Good Fortune, the joy of Venus. So the two benefics faced each other across the chart in the two most fortunate succedent places, just as the two malefics faced each other in the Sixth and Twelfth.
The eleventh place saw the rising sign by sextile, a friendly aspect, and it rose toward the Midheaven, the place of action. Astrologers read it as a place of friends, hopes, benefactors and good things to come.
Benefacta
In the medieval Latin memory rhyme the Eleventh House is benefacta: good deeds, benefits, favours done. The word describes what flows to you from other people's goodwill.
William Lilly
Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) gives the Eleventh House friends and friendship; hope, trust and confidence; the praise or criticism of anyone; the faithfulness or falseness of friends; and, for a king, his favourites, counsellors and allies, his treasury, and his courtiers. For the body he gives the legs to the ankles, and for its colour saffron or yellow. He names Jupiter as the planet that joys here.
The modern Eleventh House
Twentieth-century astrology kept friends and hopes and widened the house to groups, networks, organisations and collective causes: the person's place in a community and their ideals for society as a whole. It became the house of the team player, the activist and the networker, and of long-term goals.
Many modern books pair the Eleventh with Aquarius and Uranus. This book keeps houses and signs separate, as explained in A Short History of the Houses.
What has survived
Friends, allies, hopes and good fortune have stayed with the Eleventh House for two thousand years. The modern emphasis on groups and causes is a natural extension: a friend is the smallest group there is.
Where the Eleventh House sits
High in the eastern sky
The Eleventh House lies just after the Tenth, high above the eastern horizon. With whole sign houses it is the tenth sign on from the rising sign: Libra rising gives a Leo Eleventh House, Aries rising an Aquarius one, and so on.
It sits in the upper half (public life) and the eastern half (the self). It is where public life turns back toward the person: the career has been made, and now come the friends, rewards and hopes that grow from it.
A succedent house
The Eleventh is succedent: it follows the angle of the Midheaven. If the Tenth is the career, the Eleventh is what the career brings, which is why traditional astrologers saw it as the second house counted from the Tenth: the profit of the profession. Succedent houses were of middling strength, but the Eleventh was counted one of the best places in the chart.
A sextile to the First House
The Eleventh is two signs from the rising sign counted the other way round, a sextile, a friendly and cooperative aspect. So the Eleventh House is in easy contact with the self: friends and groups tend to support the person, and hopes are within reach.
From the Eleventh, the four houses that cannot see it are the Tenth, Twelfth, Fourth and Sixth.
The partner: the Fifth House
Directly opposite lies the Fifth House: children, pleasure, creativity and romance. The axis between them is the axis of personal joy and shared hopes, and it pairs the two fortunate places, the joys of Venus and Jupiter. The Fifth is what you create and enjoy for yourself; the Eleventh is what you build with and for other people. A love affair belongs to the Fifth, a friendship to the Eleventh; a solo performance to the Fifth, a club or society to the Eleventh.
Chapter Five read this axis from the empty side. This chapter reads it from the full side.
The twelve signs on the Eleventh House
The sign on the Eleventh House describes the kind of friends and groups you are drawn to, how you behave in them, and what you hope for. With whole sign houses it is always the tenth sign after your rising sign, so each entry names the rising sign that produces it.
These are symbolic tendencies. Read the sign with any planets in the house and with its ruler.

The Eleventh House beyond the birth chart
Natural significators
-
Jupiter, which rejoices in the Eleventh, is the natural significator of friends, benefactors, hopes and good fortune.
-
Venus stands for the affection and pleasure of friendship.
Derived houses
-
Counted from the Tenth House, the career, the Eleventh is the second: the money and rewards a profession brings. In traditional terms it is also the mother's money, since the Tenth is the mother.
-
Counted from the Seventh House, the partner, the Eleventh is the fifth: the partner's children, including stepchildren.
-
Counted from the Fifth House, your children, the Eleventh is the seventh: your children's partners.
Horary astrology
In horary astrology the Eleventh covers friends ("Can I trust this friend?"), hopes and wishes ("Will I get what I want?"), help from patrons or people of influence, and groups and societies.
Mundane astrology
In charts for nations, the Eleventh House covers parliament and legislative bodies, councils, the nation's allies and friends, and in some texts the national treasury.
Electional astrology
When choosing a time to found a society or club, launch a campaign, ask a favour, or join an organisation, electional astrologers strengthen the Eleventh House and its ruler, and look for a well-placed Jupiter.
When the Eleventh House switches on
The timing methods are explained in Chapter One. Here they are applied to the Eleventh House. When the house holds natal planets, as in the example chart, transits over those planets become the main timing events.
Profection years
The Eleventh House is activated in the year beginning on your birthday at these ages:
10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70, 82, 94
In those years friends, groups, allies and hopes come to the fore. In the example chart, with Leo on the Eleventh, the lord of the year is the Sun.
Transits through the Eleventh House
-
Jupiter (about a year): new friends, helpful contacts, good news, and hopes fulfilled.
-
Saturn (about two and a half years): friendships tested, responsibility in groups, and hopes that need patience.
-
Uranus (about seven years): new and unusual friends, sudden changes in social circle, and joining or leaving groups.
-
Neptune (about fourteen years): idealistic friendships, spiritual or charitable groups, and sometimes disillusionment.
-
Pluto (twelve to thirty years): deep change in friendships and group loyalties.
The example chart through the years
In the 1955 Bangor chart the Eleventh House is Leo and holds three planets: Uranus at 2°18′, Pluto at 28°33′ and Jupiter at 29°54′. Chapter Ten found that Jupiter crossed the Midheaven in every Tenth House profection year. One sign further on, the pattern repeats.
-
Jupiter reached natal Uranus, the first planet in this house, on 16 October 1966, 18 September 1978, 30 August 1990, 13 August 2002, 27 July 2014 and 11 July 2026. Every one of those dates falls in an Eleventh House profection year: ages 10, 22, 34, 46, 58 and 70, each with the Sun, the Eleventh House ruler, as lord of the year. It is the same twelve-year rhythm that Chapter Ten found at the Midheaven, one sign and one year later. Jupiter is in Leo now: it reaches natal Pluto on 20 July 2027 and its own natal position, the Jupiter return, on 26 July 2027.
-
Saturn was in Leo from 1975 to 1978 (ages 19 to 22) and from 2005 to 2007 (49 to 51). On its first visit it crossed natal Uranus between October 1975 and June 1976, then Pluto and Jupiter between October 1977 and July 1978, finishing in the age-22 profection year. On its second visit it crossed Uranus in August 2005, and Pluto and Jupiter in August and September 2007.
-
Uranus and Pluto were both in Leo at birth. Uranus moved on through the sign and caught up with natal Pluto and Jupiter between September 1961 and August 1962, at five and six. Pluto left Leo for good in 1958. Neptune has not entered Leo in this lifetime.
As of today, this person is in their age-70 profection year, the Eleventh House year, and Jupiter is in the Eleventh House, having crossed natal Uranus in July. The year ends on the seventy-first birthday, in November 2026.
Worked example: Bangor, 16 November 1955
The example chart is read here with the eight steps from the contents page. After a run of empty houses, this one is crowded: three planets, one of them in its joy. The main skill this chapter teaches is reading several planets in one house without losing the thread.
Step 1: the sign on the house
With Libra rising, the Eleventh House is Leo. Leo on the Eleventh suggests warm, generous, lively friendships, a tendency to take a leading role in groups, and big, wholehearted hopes.
Step 2: planets in the house
Three planets sit here, and they are best read one at a time and then together.
-
Uranus at 2°18′ Leo, retrograde. Friends who are original, independent or unusual, and groups that are progressive or a little out of the ordinary. Uranus sextiles the Ascendant within 1°14′, so this streak is in easy contact with the self. Under Placidus, Uranus falls in the Tenth House instead, as Chapter Ten noted.
-
Pluto at 28°33′ Leo. Intensity and depth in group life, powerful allies, and friendships that change you.
-
Jupiter at 29°54′ Leo, in its joy. The traditional signature of good friends, generous patrons and hopes fulfilled. As Chapter Three found, Jupiter has no major dignity in Leo, though it is a night triplicity ruler of the fire signs, and it sits six minutes from Virgo.
Jupiter and Pluto are conjunct within 1°21′, and both are sextile Neptune in the First House (Jupiter 1°01′, Pluto 0°20′). So the Eleventh House is tied tightly to the self by two exact, easy aspects: friends and ideals feed into identity and imagination. Read together, the three planets describe a social life that is generous (Jupiter), deep (Pluto) and unconventional (Uranus).
Step 3: the partner house
Directly opposite, the Fifth House (Aquarius) is empty, as Chapter Five found. Read from that side, the full house spoke for both: personal pleasure and creativity were drawn toward friends, groups and audiences. Read from this side, the same picture appears. This is a chart in which fun happens in company.
Step 4: the ruler and where it sits
Leo is ruled by the Sun, at 22°58′ Scorpio in the Second House. So the ruler of the 11th is in the 2nd: friends and groups are linked with money and resources, and contacts may help with earning. The Second sees the Eleventh by square, a working but demanding contact.
Step 5: the condition of the ruler
The Sun is neutral by sign in Scorpio, and as a day planet in a night chart it is out of sect, below the horizon. It is conjunct Saturn within 0°44′ and square Pluto within 5°35′. Saturn so close to the ruler suggests that, for all the warmth of the house itself, the person takes friendships seriously and keeps the close ones few and lasting. The square to Pluto, which sits in the Eleventh, ties the ruler back into its own house through a tense, powerful contact.
Step 6: natural significators
-
Jupiter, the natural significator of friends and hopes, is in the house itself, in its own joy. The house could hardly be better supported.
-
Venus, the significator of affection, sits in the Third House, which sees the Eleventh by trine. Friendship and conversation run easily together.
Step 7: derived houses
Counted from the Tenth (the career), the Eleventh is the second: the rewards of the profession. Its ruler, the Sun, sits in the native's own Second House. The income from the career flows straight into the person's own resources, which fits the Second House emphasis found throughout this book.
Step 8: timing
The profection years are 10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70 and 82, with the Sun as lord of the year. As the chart above shows, Jupiter has crossed natal Uranus in every one of them so far. This person is in the age-70 year now, and Jupiter, the planet that rejoices in this house, is crossing it. It reaches natal Pluto and its own natal position in July 2027.
Putting it together
Friendship, group life and hope are among the strongest themes in the chart. Friends are warm and generous (Leo, Jupiter in its joy), often unconventional (Uranus), and sometimes powerful or life-changing (Pluto conjunct Jupiter). The house is bound tightly to the self by exact sextiles to Neptune in the First, so friends and ideals shape identity. The ruler, the Sun, joined to Saturn in the Second, adds seriousness: close friends are few, loyal and long-standing, and contacts are linked to earning. Pleasure is found in company rather than alone (an empty Fifth facing this full Eleventh). The house is active now, in the Eleventh House profection year, with Jupiter crossing it.
What this example adds
This chapter shows how to read a crowded house: take each planet in turn, look at the aspects between them and to the rest of the chart, then combine. It also completes a pattern that runs through Chapters Ten and Eleven: when a slow-moving cycle and a timing technique fall into step, as Jupiter and the profection years do here, the same kind of year comes round again and again.
