The Ninth House

Pietas: religion

The house of the wider world and the higher mind: religion and belief, philosophy, universities, law, publishing, and long journeys abroad.

The far horizon

The Third House is the bus to Llandudno. The Ninth House is the flight to Kathmandu.

The Third is the local paper, the school run, the chat over the garden wall. The Ninth is the university, the cathedral, the law court, the publisher's office and the long-haul departure lounge. It is where you go to find out what everything means, whether you look for the answer in a holy book, a philosophy, a law library or the view from the top of a mountain.

The Ninth House is the house of the far horizon: long journeys and foreign lands, religion and belief, higher learning, law, publishing, and the search for meaning.

It sits high in the chart, above the western horizon, just short of the Midheaven. The Greek astrologers called it God, the place where the Sun rejoices, opposite the Third House, the place of the Moon goddess. Where the Third is the everyday mind, the Ninth is the mind looking outward and upward.

What the Ninth House rules

Category What the Ninth House covers
Life areas Long journeys and life abroad, religion and belief, philosophy, higher education, law, publishing, prophecy and dreams
The body The hips and thighs
People Clergy and religious teachers, lecturers and scholars, lawyers and judges, publishers, foreigners, in-laws (as the partner's siblings)
Things Books, scripture, universities, churches and temples, courts, passports, ships and long-distance travel
Events Journeys abroad, emigration, degrees and study, religious conversion or crisis of faith, lawsuits, publication

Long journeys

The Ninth is the house of travel over long distances: journeys abroad, voyages, pilgrimages, emigration, and foreign places and peoples generally. In Lilly's day a long journey might have been to London; today it is more likely to be another continent. The point is the same: the journey takes you out of your familiar world.

Religion and belief

The Ninth is the house of religion. The Latin rhyme calls it pietas, devotion or duty to the gods. It covers faith, worship, the church, temple, mosque or chapel, the clergy, and in modern astrology any system of belief that tells you what life is for, religious or not. The house describes how a person relates to belief, not which belief is right.

Higher learning

Where the Third House is basic schooling, the Ninth is the university, advanced study, philosophy and the pursuit of wisdom. Teachers at that level, scholars and mentors are Ninth House people.

Law and publishing

The Ninth covers law and the courts as systems of justice, along with lawyers and judges. (The other side in a particular lawsuit is the Seventh House.) It also covers publishing, broadcasting and anything that spreads ideas widely.

Dreams and visions

Traditionally the Ninth also covered dreams, visions and prophecy, including astrology itself. Lilly placed the knowledge of dreams here.

The common thread

Everything here takes you beyond the familiar, in body or in mind, toward a wider world and a bigger picture. The Third House is what is near and known; the Ninth is what is far and still to be understood.

The Ninth House through history

The general story of the houses is told in A Short History of the Houses. This section follows the Ninth House's own part in it.

God

The Greek astrologers called the ninth place God (theos), and it was the place where the Sun rejoiced. Directly opposite, the third place was the Goddess, where the Moon rejoiced. So the two luminaries faced each other across the chart, one on each side of the horizon: the Sun in the upper, daylit half and the Moon in the lower, nocturnal half.

The ninth place saw the rising sign by trine, the most harmonious aspect, and it was a good place despite being cadent. It covered religion, divination, travel abroad, and the gods; it was where astrologers looked for a person's relationship with the divine and with the wider world.

Pietas

In the medieval Latin memory rhyme the Ninth House is pietas: devotion, piety, the duty owed to God and to one's family. The rhyme picks religion as the meaning astrologers thought of first.

William Lilly

Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) gives the Ninth House voyages and long journeys beyond the seas; religious people and the clergy; dreams and visions; foreign countries; books, learning and church livings; and the relatives of one's spouse. For the body he gives the buttocks, hips and thighs, and for its colours green and white. He names Sagittarius and Jupiter as consignificators, and the Sun as the planet that joys here.

The modern Ninth House

Twentieth-century astrology kept travel, religion and higher education and widened the house to cover meaning in general: philosophy, ethics, a personal world view, the search for truth, and the urge to explore. It became the house of the seeker, the teacher and the traveller. Publishing and broadcasting, and later the internet as a means of spreading ideas, joined law as Ninth House matters.

Many modern books pair the Ninth with Sagittarius and Jupiter. Lilly's consignificators show that the link is old, but it is a secondary association, not an equation. This book keeps houses and signs separate, as explained in A Short History of the Houses.

What has survived

Religion, long journeys and learning have stayed with the Ninth House for two thousand years. The modern Ninth is broader, taking in any belief or philosophy, but it is recognisably the same place the Greeks called God: the part of the chart that looks beyond the everyday.

Where the Ninth House sits

High in the western sky

The Ninth House lies just before the Tenth, high above the western horizon. With whole sign houses it is the eighth sign on from the rising sign: Libra rising gives a Gemini Ninth House, Aries rising a Sagittarius one, and so on.

It sits in the upper half (outward life) and the western half (other people). It is the place in the sky the Sun has just passed through after noon, which fits its link with the Sun.

A cadent house

The Ninth is cadent: it falls away from the Midheaven angle, as each planet moves on from the top of the sky into the Ninth. Cadent houses were the weakest of the three kinds, but the Ninth was the exception that proved the rule: thanks to its trine with the Ascendant and the joy of the Sun, it was counted a good place.

A trine to the First House

The Ninth is four signs from the rising sign counted the other way round, a trine, the most harmonious relationship. So the Ninth House is in easy contact with the self: belief, learning and travel tend to support and widen the person rather than drain them.

From the Ninth, the four houses that cannot see it are the Second, Fourth, Eighth and Tenth.

The partner: the Third House

Directly opposite lies the Third House: siblings, neighbours, everyday communication, short journeys and basic learning. The axis between them is the axis of near and far. The Third is the local, the familiar and the everyday; the Ninth is the distant, the foreign and the profound. A text message belongs to the Third, a published book to the Ninth; a school to the Third, a university to the Ninth; a trip to the shops to the Third, a pilgrimage to the Ninth.

The axis also pairs the joys of the two luminaries: the Moon in the Third and the Sun in the Ninth. When one side is crowded and the other nearly empty, as in this chapter's worked example, the busy side tends to set the tone for both.

The twelve signs on the Ninth House

The sign on the Ninth House describes how you approach belief, learning and travel: what kind of meaning you look for, how you study, and what draws you abroad. With whole sign houses it is always the eighth sign after your rising sign, so each entry names the rising sign that produces it.

These are symbolic tendencies. They describe a style of believing and learning, not which religion or philosophy a person will follow, and they make no judgement about any faith. Read the sign with any planets in the house and with its ruler.

Aries on the Ninth House

Leo rising. You hold your beliefs with passion and like to defend them. Travel is adventurous and spur of the moment, and you learn by doing.

  • Strengths: conviction, courage, a pioneering mind.

  • Watch-outs: dogmatism, and arguments about beliefs.

  • Ruler: Mars.

Taurus on the Ninth House

Virgo rising. Beliefs are practical, steady and slow to change. You like a philosophy you can live by, travel that is comfortable, and learning that leads to something useful.

  • Strengths: constancy, common sense, a grounded faith or world view.

  • Watch-outs: stubbornness, and suspicion of new ideas.

  • Ruler: Venus.

Gemini on the Ninth House

Libra rising, as in this book's example chart. You are curious about every belief and philosophy and want to talk them all through. You may study many subjects, travel often rather than far, and write or teach about what you learn.

  • Strengths: open-mindedness, curiosity, a gift for explaining ideas.

  • Watch-outs: restlessness of belief, and knowing a little about a lot.

  • Ruler: Mercury.

Cancer on the Ninth House

Scorpio rising. Belief is emotional and tied to family, tradition and belonging. You may travel to find roots, or feel at home abroad, and you learn best where you feel safe.

  • Strengths: faith rooted in care, loyalty to tradition.

  • Watch-outs: clinging to inherited beliefs, and homesickness abroad.

  • Ruler: the Moon.

Leo on the Ninth House

Sagittarius rising. You want beliefs that inspire you and that you can share with confidence. You may teach, preach or perform your ideas, and travel in style.

  • Strengths: enthusiasm, generosity of spirit, natural teaching ability.

  • Watch-outs: pride in one's own opinions, and preaching rather than listening.

  • Ruler: the Sun.

Virgo on the Ninth House

Capricorn rising. You examine beliefs critically and want them to stand up to analysis. Study is careful and detailed, and travel is well planned.

  • Strengths: rigour, practical wisdom, skill in research.

  • Watch-outs: scepticism that becomes cynicism, and getting lost in detail.

  • Ruler: Mercury.

Libra on the Ninth House

Aquarius rising. You are drawn to fairness, balance and justice in belief and law. You weigh different views, enjoy debate, and may travel with a partner or for partnership.

  • Strengths: fairness, a sense of justice, openness to other views.

  • Watch-outs: indecision, and adopting a partner's beliefs.

  • Ruler: Venus.

Scorpio on the Ninth House

Pisces rising. You want to get to the bottom of things. Belief is intense and may go through deep crises and conversions; you may be drawn to the mysterious, the occult, or research.

  • Strengths: depth, commitment, investigative power.

  • Watch-outs: fanaticism, and secrecy about what you really think.

  • Ruler: Mars in traditional astrology; Pluto in modern astrology.

Sagittarius on the Ninth House

Aries rising. You are a natural explorer of ideas and places, optimistic and broad-minded. Faith, philosophy and travel come easily and matter a great deal.

  • Strengths: optimism, wide horizons, a generous world view.

  • Watch-outs: over-confidence, and restlessness.

  • Ruler: Jupiter.

Capricorn on the Ninth House

Taurus rising. You respect tradition, authority and established learning. Beliefs are serious and built over time, and you may travel for work or study a profession.

  • Strengths: discipline, respect for wisdom, steady progress in study.

  • Watch-outs: rigidity, and a fear of the unfamiliar.

  • Ruler: Saturn.

Aquarius on the Ninth House

Gemini rising. You are drawn to new, unconventional or progressive ideas, science, and causes. You may break with the beliefs you grew up with, and travel to unusual places.

  • Strengths: originality, independence of thought, humanitarian ideals.

  • Watch-outs: contrariness, and holding ideas too far from real life.

  • Ruler: Saturn in traditional astrology; Uranus in modern astrology.

Pisces on the Ninth House

Cancer rising. Belief is mystical, compassionate and imaginative. You may be drawn to spiritual practice, music or art as a path to meaning, and to journeys by sea.

  • Strengths: spiritual depth, compassion, imagination.

  • Watch-outs: confusion, and following teachers uncritically.

  • Ruler: Jupiter in traditional astrology; Neptune in modern astrology.

Planets in the Ninth House

A planet in the Ninth House works through belief, learning, travel and the wider world. Because the house is trine to the Ascendant and was a good place for the Greek astrologers, its planets tend to act in the person's favour, even though the house is cadent. The benefics and malefics are explained in Chapter One.

The Sun in the Ninth House

The Sun rejoices in the Ninth House, so this is one of its best placements. Identity is bound up with ideas, belief, learning or travel; you may be a natural teacher, explorer or seeker, and you want life to mean something.

  • At its best: vision, conviction, inspiring leadership in ideas.

  • Under strain: self-righteousness, and restlessness.

  • Tradition: a luminary in its joy, read as honour through learning, religion or travel, and a good reputation abroad.

The Moon in the Ninth House

The Moon here makes belief emotional and travel a need. You may move abroad, feel at home in foreign places, or find comfort in faith or philosophy. Dreams can be vivid.

  • At its best: intuition, openness to other cultures, a nurturing teacher.

  • Under strain: changeable beliefs, and restlessness for distant places.

  • Tradition: a luminary in the place opposite its joy, read as many journeys, changes of belief, and significant dreams.

Mercury in the Ninth House

Mercury here gives a curious, scholarly mind. You may study languages, write, teach, publish, or work in law, and you enjoy debating big ideas.

  • At its best: learning, eloquence, a gift for languages and writing.

  • Under strain: argumentativeness, and scattered study.

  • Tradition: read as a scholarly or literary mind, and dealings with foreigners and in law.

Venus in the Ninth House

Venus here brings pleasure through travel, culture and learning. You may love art and beauty from other places, meet a partner abroad or through study, and hold a warm, tolerant faith.

  • At its best: tolerance, love of culture, pleasant journeys.

  • Under strain: idealising the foreign, and avoiding difficult ideas.

  • Tradition: a benefic in a good place, read as happy journeys, a pleasant religious life, and gain through in-laws.

Mars in the Ninth House

Mars here brings fighting spirit to belief, study and travel. You may champion causes, argue for your views, or travel adventurously.

  • At its best: courage of conviction, adventure, energy in study.

  • Under strain: zealotry, legal disputes, and mishaps abroad.

  • Tradition: the lesser malefic here, read as quarrels over religion or law and dangers on journeys, especially in a day chart, when Mars is out of sect.

Jupiter in the Ninth House

Jupiter is very much at home here. You are drawn to philosophy, religion, higher learning and travel, and they tend to go well.

  • At its best: wisdom, generosity of spirit, success in learning and travel.

  • Under strain: preachiness, and over-confidence in one's own views.

  • Tradition: the greater benefic in a good place, and Lilly's consignificator of the house: read as a sincere faith, honour through learning or the church, and profitable journeys.

Saturn in the Ninth House

Saturn here makes belief and study serious. You may hold a strict or traditional faith, distrust easy answers, or come to study late and with great discipline. Long journeys may be for duty rather than pleasure.

  • At its best: depth, discipline, lasting scholarship.

  • Under strain: rigidity, doubt, and delays or difficulties abroad.

  • Tradition: the greater malefic here, read as troubles on journeys and in religion, and a grave or melancholy turn of mind, especially in a day chart.

Uranus in the Ninth House

Uranus, a modern addition, makes belief independent and unconventional. You may break with tradition, be drawn to new ideas or sciences, and travel suddenly or to unusual places.

  • At its best: original thought, progressive ideals, freedom of belief.

  • Under strain: contrariness, and sudden changes of direction.

  • Tradition: none.

Neptune in the Ninth House

Neptune, a modern addition, makes belief mystical and idealistic. You may be drawn to spirituality, music or art as a path to meaning, or long for faraway places.

  • At its best: spiritual vision, compassion, imagination.

  • Under strain: gullibility, and confusion about what to believe.

  • Tradition: none.

Pluto in the Ninth House

Pluto, a modern addition, makes belief intense and transforming. You may go through profound changes of world view, or be drawn to research into what lies beneath.

  • At its best: depth of insight, transforming ideas, investigative power.

  • Under strain: fanaticism, and power struggles over belief.

  • Tradition: none.

The Lunar Nodes

A Node in the Ninth House always means the other Node is in the Third, so these entries are about the balance between near and far.

North Node in the Ninth House

The direction of growth is toward the bigger picture: travel, higher learning and a personal philosophy. You may be used to local life and everyday talk, and life asks you to look further.

  • Modern reading: growth through study, travel and belief, with everyday communication (the South Node in the Third) as the comfortable habit.

  • Medieval reading: an increase in journeys, learning and religious honours.

South Node in the Ninth House

Big ideas and wide horizons come easily, perhaps too easily. With the North Node in the Third, growth lies in the local, the practical and the everyday: talking, writing, and staying in touch with the people nearby.

  • Modern reading: growth through everyday communication and community, with abstract belief as the comfortable habit.

  • Medieval reading: a diminishing point, read as hindrances to journeys and to the matters of religion and learning.

The ruler of the Ninth House

The planet that rules the sign on the Ninth House shows where your beliefs, learning and travels lead. This book uses the classical rulers, with the modern ruler of Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces as a second opinion. From the Ninth House, the four houses that cannot see it are the Eighth, Tenth, Second and Fourth.

The Ninth House beyond the birth chart

Natural significators

  • Jupiter, Lilly's consignificator of the Ninth, is the natural significator of religion, philosophy, law, higher learning and long journeys.

  • The Sun, which rejoices in the Ninth, stands for the divine and for honour through knowledge.

  • Mercury stands for study, books and languages, wherever the learning happens.

Derived houses

  • Counted from the Seventh House, the partner, the Ninth is the third: the partner's siblings. That is why the Ninth covers in-laws, and why Lilly lists the spouse's relatives here.

  • Counted from the Third House, your siblings, the Ninth is the seventh: your siblings' partners.

  • Counted from the Fifth House, your children, the Ninth is the fifth: your grandchildren.

Horary astrology

In horary astrology the Ninth covers journeys ("Will the trip go well?"), study and exams ("Will I get the place?"), publishing, legal advice, matters of religion, and dreams ("What does this dream mean?").

Mundane astrology

In charts for nations, the Ninth House covers religion and the churches, universities, the legal system and courts, publishing and the press, foreign trade, long-distance transport, and relations with distant countries.

Electional astrology

When choosing a time to set out on a long journey, begin a course of study, publish a book, or start a legal case, electional astrologers strengthen the Ninth House and its ruler, and look for a well-placed Jupiter and Mercury.

When the Ninth House switches on

The timing methods are explained in Chapter One. Here they are applied to the Ninth House.

Profection years

The Ninth House is activated in the year beginning on your birthday at these ages:

8, 20, 32, 44, 56, 68, 80, 92

In those years travel, study, belief and the wider world come to the fore. In the example chart, with Gemini on the Ninth, the lord of the year is Mercury.

Transits through the Ninth House

  • Jupiter (about a year): journeys, study, publication, and a widening of outlook.

  • Saturn (about two and a half years): serious study, testing of beliefs, journeys for duty, and qualifications earned the hard way.

  • Uranus (about seven years): sudden journeys, new ideas, a break with old beliefs, and unexpected opportunities to learn.

  • Neptune (about fourteen years): spiritual searching, idealism about distant places or teachers, and sometimes confusion of belief.

  • Pluto (twelve to thirty years): deep change in world view and belief.

The example chart through the years

In the 1955 Bangor chart the Ninth House is Gemini, holding only the South Node at 17°26′. Directly opposite, in Sagittarius in the Third, sit the Moon (10°48′), Venus (12°31′) and the North Node. So every planet crossing Gemini opposes the Moon and Venus and passes over the South Node.

Uranus entered this Ninth House in 2025 and is there nowtime each slow planet spent in Gemini, with the profection years19601970198019902000201020202030Profection yearsProfection year, age 88Profection year, age 2020Profection year, age 3232Profection year, age 4444Profection year, age 5656Profection year, age 6868JupiterJupiter in Gemini, 1965 to 1965Jupiter in Gemini, 1965 to 1966Jupiter in Gemini, 1976 to 1976Jupiter in Gemini, 1977 to 1977Jupiter in Gemini, 1977 to 1978Jupiter in Gemini, 1988 to 1988Jupiter in Gemini, 1989 to 1989Jupiter in Gemini, 2000 to 2001Jupiter in Gemini, 2012 to 2013Jupiter in Gemini, 2024 to 2025SaturnSaturn in Gemini, 1971 to 1972Saturn in Gemini, 1972 to 1973Saturn in Gemini, 1974 to 1974Saturn in Gemini, 2000 to 2000Saturn in Gemini, 2001 to 2003UranusUranus in Gemini, 2025 to 2025Uranus in Gemini, 2026 to 2026NeptunePluto
Calculated with astronomy-engine 2.1.19 for the example chart; dates accurate to within a few days. Short retrograde gaps are merged. Uranus remains in Gemini; neither Neptune nor Pluto has reached it in this lifetime.
  • Saturn was in Gemini from 1971 to 1974 (ages 15 to 18) and from 2000 to 2003 (44 to 47). Its second visit began in August 2000, in the age-44 profection year, with Mercury as lord of the year. It opposed the Moon and Venus between July 2001 and April 2002, and crossed the South Node in June 2002.

  • Jupiter passes through Gemini about every twelve years. Its 2012 arrival in June fell in the age-56 profection year, and its 2024 arrival in May fell in the age-68 year; in July 2024 it opposed the Moon and then Venus.

  • Uranus entered Gemini in July 2025, at 69, slipped back into Taurus that November, and returned in April 2026. It is the first time in this lifetime that one of the three outer planets has entered the Ninth. It trines the Ascendant between June 2026 and April 2027, and will oppose the Moon and Venus in 2028 and 2029 and cross the South Node in 2029 and 2030. It stays in Gemini until the early 2030s.

  • Neptune and Pluto have not entered Gemini in this lifetime.

Worked example: Bangor, 16 November 1955

The example chart is read here with the eight steps from the contents page. As elsewhere in this chapter, the reading describes a style of belief, learning and travel, not any particular faith.

Step 1: the sign on the house

With Libra rising, the Ninth House is Gemini. Gemini on the Ninth suggests curiosity about every belief and philosophy, a love of discussing ideas, many interests rather than one, and frequent journeys rather than one great voyage.

Step 2: planets in the house

The only point here is the South Node, at 17°26′ Gemini. Under Placidus the Ninth begins at 27°54′ Gemini, so the South Node falls in the Eighth and the Ninth is empty. This is a good example of why the book asks you to name the house system you are using.

With whole sign houses, the South Node here means the North Node is in the Third, so the direction of growth points from the Ninth toward the Third: from abstract belief and the big picture toward everyday words and local connection.

Step 3: the partner house

Directly opposite, the Third House (Sagittarius) holds the Moon at 10°48′, Venus at 12°31′ and the North Node at 17°26′. As Chapter Three showed, this is the warm heart of the chart. The near-and-far axis is weighted toward the near: big ideas are lived and shared through everyday conversation, writing and teaching rather than kept in the study or the pulpit.

There is a neat crossover too. Sagittarius, the sign most associated with travel and philosophy, is on the Third House, and Gemini, the sign most associated with talk and short journeys, is on the Ninth. The person's everyday conversation has a broad, philosophical flavour, and their search for meaning is curious, chatty and varied.

Step 4: the ruler and where it sits

Gemini is ruled by Mercury, at 12°23′ Scorpio in the Second House. So the ruler of the 9th is in the 2nd: learning, belief and travel are linked with money and resources. Knowledge may be turned into earning, through teaching, writing or publishing. The Second cannot see the Ninth, so the link runs through practical, money-minded channels rather than directly.

Mercury in Scorpio adds depth: an investigative, probing mind that wants to get to the bottom of things before it believes them.

Step 5: the condition of the ruler

As Chapter Two found, Mercury is neutral in Scorpio and about ten and a half degrees from the Sun, under the Sun's beams: a mind that works privately and does not always show its hand. Using the book's 6° orb, it sextiles the Part of Fortune (3°21′).

Step 6: natural significators

  • Jupiter, the significator of religion, learning and long journeys, sits in its own joy in the Eleventh House, which sees the Ninth by sextile. Belief and learning are supported by friends, groups and networks.

  • The Sun, which rejoices in the Ninth, sits in the Second with Mercury, and like Mercury it cannot see the Ninth. The Sun's honour comes from resources and earning rather than from belief or learning as such.

Step 7: derived houses

Counted from the Seventh (the partner), the Ninth is the third: the partner's siblings, the in-laws. Their ruler is Mercury in the Second, so traditionally an astrologer might link in-laws with practical and financial matters.

Step 8: timing

The profection years are 8, 20, 32, 44, 56, 68 and 80, with Mercury as lord of the year. Saturn's second visit to Gemini began in the age-44 year, in August 2000, and went on to oppose the Moon and Venus in 2001 and 2002. Jupiter entered Gemini in the age-56 and age-68 years.

The main story is happening now. Uranus entered Gemini in 2025, the first time an outer planet has crossed this house in this lifetime. It trines the Ascendant from June 2026 to April 2027, and will oppose the Moon and Venus in 2028 and 2029.

Putting it together

Belief, learning and travel are approached with curiosity and variety rather than single-minded devotion (Gemini), and big ideas are lived through everyday conversation, writing and teaching (the crowded Third House opposite, and the North Node there). Knowledge is turned to practical use and may become a source of income (Mercury, the ruler, in the Second), with a probing, private, investigative style (Mercury in Scorpio, under the beams). Friends and groups support the person's search for meaning (Jupiter in the Eleventh, sextile the Ninth). The house is waking up now, with Uranus crossing it for the first time.

What this example adds

This chapter shows two things. First, how a house system can change a placement: the South Node is in the Ninth with whole sign houses but in the Eighth with Placidus. Second, how the signs on an axis can cross over the houses' meanings, with the travel sign on the house of the near and the talk sign on the house of the far, and how that crossover is often the most telling part of the reading.
