The Twelfth House

Carcer: prison

The house of what is hidden and withdrawn: prisons and hospitals, secret enemies, sorrow and self-undoing, and in modern astrology solitude, retreat and the unconscious.

Behind the curtain

Every chart has a back room. It is where the things go that do not fit anywhere else: the worries kept at three in the morning, the habits you would rather nobody knew about, the people working against you that you never quite see. It is the hospital ward, the monastery cell, the prison, the long-stay ward, the lonely flat. It is also the writing shed, the chapel, the quiet hour before dawn, the work done anonymously for no thanks at all.

Astrology has always put this house last, and given it the worst reputation of the twelve. It has also, more recently, found something precious in it.

The Twelfth House is the house of what is hidden and withdrawn: confinement and institutions, secret enemies and self-undoing, sorrow and solitude, and, in modern astrology, retreat, the inner life and the unconscious.

It sits just above the eastern horizon, the sign before the rising sign. The Greek astrologers called it the Bad Spirit, the place where Saturn rejoices, and it cannot see the Ascendant at all. Where the First House is the person stepping into the world, the Twelfth is what comes before: what is behind them, unseen, and not yet born.

What the Twelfth House rules

Category What the Twelfth House covers
Life areas Confinement, institutions, secret enemies, self-undoing, sorrow and loss, solitude, retreat, the inner and spiritual life
The body The feet
People Secret enemies and informers, prisoners and captives, people in hospitals and institutions, those who work behind the scenes; in modern astrology carers, contemplatives and anonymous helpers
Things Prisons, hospitals, asylums, monasteries and retreats, large animals
Events Withdrawal from public life, hospital stays, confinement, hidden troubles coming to light, quiet spiritual turning points

Confinement and institutions

The Twelfth is the house of places you cannot easily leave: prisons, hospitals, long-stay institutions, and in older texts exile and captivity. Modern astrologers widen this to any place of retreat or seclusion, chosen or not: a monastery, a hospice, a remote cottage, a long recovery at home.

Hidden enemies and self-undoing

Where the Seventh House holds the open enemy, the Twelfth holds the secret one: the person who works against you unseen, the rumour, the informer. Traditional astrologers also gave it self-undoing: the ways people trip themselves up through habits, fears and blind spots. Sometimes the hidden enemy is yourself.

Sorrow and solitude

The Twelfth covers sorrow, grief, loneliness and trouble that does not easily show. Its old name, carcer, prison, sums up the feeling of being shut away from ordinary life.

Retreat and the inner life

Modern astrology has found another side to the house: solitude chosen rather than imposed, contemplation, prayer and meditation, dreams, imagination, and the unconscious. Work done quietly, anonymously or for others' benefit, such as caring, research or charity, is Twelfth House work. So is the creative work that comes out of long hours alone.

Large animals

Traditionally the Twelfth ruled large animals, the kind you ride or work, such as horses and cattle. (Small animals belong to the Sixth.) It sounds odd now, but in Lilly's world both kinds of livestock were matters of daily concern.

The common thread

Everything here is out of sight: hidden from others, hidden from yourself, or withdrawn from the world by choice or by force. The Sixth House is trouble you can see and treat; the Twelfth is what lies beneath.

The Twelfth House through history

The general story of the houses is told in A Short History of the Houses. This section follows the Twelfth House's own part in it.

The Bad Spirit

The Greek astrologers called the twelfth place the Bad Spirit (kakos daimōn), the mirror of the Eleventh's Good Spirit. It was the joy of Saturn, just as the Sixth was the joy of Mars, so the two malefics each had their home in one of the two worst places.

Its bad name came from two things. It is next to the rising sign, so it is in aversion: it cannot see the person, and its matters happen out of their sight and control. And it is the sign that has just risen and is now climbing away from the horizon, declining from the strongest angle. Astrologers read it as a place of enemies, suffering, captivity and loss.

Carcer

In the medieval Latin memory rhyme the Twelfth House is carcer, prison. It is the last word of the rhyme, and the grimmest after mors.

William Lilly

Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) gives the Twelfth House private enemies; witches; great cattle such as horses and oxen; sorrow, tribulation and imprisonment; all manner of affliction and self-undoing; and people who secretly undermine or inform against their neighbours. For the body he gives the feet, and for its colour green. He names Saturn as the planet that joys here, and Pisces and Venus as consignificators.

The modern Twelfth House

Twentieth-century astrology kept the hidden side of the house and added a spiritual one. The Twelfth became the house of the unconscious, of dreams and imagination, of spiritual practice, compassion and service to people in need. It also became the house of what we carry without knowing it: patterns inherited from family or the past that shape a life from behind the scenes. In modern readings it can hold a person's deepest peace as well as their deepest trouble.

Many modern books pair the Twelfth with Pisces and Neptune. Lilly's consignificators show that the Pisces link is old, but it is a secondary association, not an equation. This book keeps houses and signs separate, as explained in A Short History of the Houses.

What has survived

Confinement, hidden enemies, sorrow and self-undoing have stayed with the Twelfth House for two thousand years. The modern reading has not cancelled them; it has added the chosen solitude of the hermit, the artist and the carer to the imposed solitude of the prisoner and the patient. Both are lives lived out of sight.

Where the Twelfth House sits

Just above the eastern horizon

The Twelfth House lies just before the First, above the eastern horizon. With whole sign houses it is the sign before the rising sign, the eleventh sign on from it: Libra rising gives a Virgo Twelfth House, Aries rising a Pisces one, and so on.

It sits in the upper half and the eastern half of the chart. Through the day, every planet passes into it soon after rising, climbing away from the horizon toward the Midheaven. It is the last house in the count, and the one the Sun passes through in the hours after dawn.

A cadent house

The Twelfth is cadent: it falls away from the Ascendant, the strongest angle, as planets climb out of the First House into the Twelfth. Cadent houses were the weakest of the three kinds, and the Twelfth and Sixth were the two most difficult.

In aversion to the First House

The Twelfth is next door to the rising sign, so the two make no aspect: the Twelfth is in aversion to the First House. It is one of four houses (with the Second, Sixth and Eighth) that cannot see the Ascendant. What happens here happens behind the person's back, out of their sight, which is the whole of its traditional character.

From the Twelfth, the four houses that cannot see it are the Eleventh, First, Fifth and Seventh.

The partner: the Sixth House

Directly opposite lies the Sixth House: illness, work, service and daily routine. The two houses are the joys of the two malefics, Mars in the Sixth and Saturn in the Twelfth, and the axis between them is the axis of service and retreat.

The Sixth is the illness you can see and treat; the Twelfth is the hospital stay, the long recovery, the trouble you cannot name. The Sixth is daily duty among other people; the Twelfth is what happens behind closed doors, and the work done in seclusion. Chapter Six read the axis from the other end.

The twelve signs on the Twelfth House

The sign on the Twelfth House describes what you keep hidden, how you behave when alone or under pressure, what tends to trip you up, and where you find retreat and peace. With whole sign houses it is always the sign just before your rising sign, so each entry names the rising sign that produces it.

These are symbolic tendencies, not predictions of illness, confinement or enemies. Read the sign with any planets in the house and with its ruler.

  • Ruler: Jupiter in traditional astrology; Neptune in modern astrology.

Planets in the Twelfth House

A planet in the Twelfth House works out of sight: in private, behind the scenes, through institutions, or in the inner life. Because the house is cadent and cannot see the Ascendant, traditional astrologers thought its planets were hidden or hampered, unable to act openly for the person. Modern astrologers add that they can be a source of private strength. The benefics and malefics are explained in Chapter One.

One practical note: with quadrant house systems, a planet in the Twelfth but within a few degrees of the Ascendant is often read as rising, and so as part of the First House. With whole sign houses this rarely matters, because the Twelfth is a whole sign away from the rising degree's sign.

The Sun in the Twelfth House

The Sun here puts identity partly out of sight. You may work best behind the scenes, need a lot of time alone, or be most yourself in private. Recognition may come late or quietly.

  • At its best: inner strength, devoted service, creative work in solitude.

  • Under strain: feeling unseen, and self-doubt.

  • Tradition: a luminary in a hidden, averse place, read as obscurity, hidden enemies, and limits on honour.

The Moon in the Twelfth House

The Moon here makes feelings private and sometimes hard to share. You may be very sensitive to atmosphere, need retreat to recharge, and care deeply for people who are vulnerable.

  • At its best: empathy, intuition, a gift for caring work.

  • Under strain: hidden moods, and loneliness.

  • Tradition: a luminary in a hidden place, read as private sorrows and dealings with institutions.

Mercury in the Twelfth House

Mercury here gives a private, reflective mind. You may write, research or think best alone, keep a journal, or work with confidential information.

  • At its best: depth of thought, research, discretion.

  • Under strain: secretiveness, and worry kept to yourself.

  • Tradition: read as secret dealings, hidden letters, and a mind turned inward.

Venus in the Twelfth House

Venus here makes love and pleasure private. You may keep relationships quiet, find beauty in solitude, or give generously without being seen.

  • At its best: compassion, hidden kindness, private creativity.

  • Under strain: secret love affairs, and self-sacrifice in love.

  • Tradition: a benefic in a bad place, which can do less good here; read as secret loves, and help from unseen friends.

Mars in the Twelfth House

Mars here sends energy behind the scenes. You may fight hidden battles, work hard in private, or find that anger turns inward.

  • At its best: courage in private struggles, energy for unseen work.

  • Under strain: suppressed anger, and hidden enemies.

  • Tradition: the lesser malefic in a bad place, read as secret enemies and troubles through hidden opposition, especially in a day chart, when Mars is out of sect.

Jupiter in the Twelfth House

Jupiter here is the classic "hidden protector": help that comes from unseen sources, faith in hard times, and generosity given quietly. You may work in charity, care or spiritual life.

  • At its best: inner faith, protection, generosity behind the scenes.

  • Under strain: escapism, and over-generosity.

  • Tradition: the greater benefic in a bad place, read as hidden help and the turning of enemies into friends, though Jupiter cannot do its full good from here.

Saturn in the Twelfth House

Saturn rejoices in the Twelfth House, so this is its home ground. You may carry hidden burdens, need long periods of solitude, or do serious, disciplined work behind the scenes.

  • At its best: endurance, inner discipline, mastery in solitude.

  • Under strain: hidden fears, isolation, and self-limitation.

  • Tradition: the greater malefic in its joy, where it does least harm to the person; still read as hidden sorrows and secret enemies, but steadier in a day chart, when Saturn belongs to the chart's sect.

Uranus in the Twelfth House

Uranus, a modern addition, makes the inner life restless and original. Insights may arrive suddenly from nowhere, and independence may be expressed in private.

  • At its best: flashes of insight, unconventional spirituality.

  • Under strain: hidden restlessness, and sudden upsets from unseen causes.

  • Tradition: none.

Neptune in the Twelfth House

Neptune, a modern addition, is often said to be at home here. The inner life is rich, imaginative and spiritual, and boundaries between self and others are thin.

  • At its best: compassion, spiritual depth, imagination.

  • Under strain: escapism, and confusion about what is real.

  • Tradition: none.

Pluto in the Twelfth House

Pluto, a modern addition, gives a powerful hidden side. You may be drawn to psychology or research, and go through deep private transformations.

  • At its best: insight into what is hidden, inner resilience.

  • Under strain: buried fears, and secrecy.

  • Tradition: none.

The Lunar Nodes

A Node in the Twelfth House always means the other Node is in the Sixth, so these entries are about the balance between service and retreat.

North Node in the Twelfth House

The direction of growth is toward solitude, reflection and the inner life. You may be used to keeping busy with work and routine, and life asks you to slow down and look inward.

  • Modern reading: growth through retreat and spiritual life, with busy routine (the South Node in the Sixth) as the comfortable habit.

  • Medieval reading: an increase in the matters of the house, for good or ill.

South Node in the Twelfth House

Retreat and solitude come easily, perhaps too easily. With the North Node in the Sixth, growth lies in practical work, service and engagement with daily life.

  • Modern reading: growth through work and service, with withdrawal as the comfortable habit.

  • Medieval reading: a diminishing point, read as relief from hidden enemies and troubles.

The ruler of the Twelfth House

The planet that rules the sign on the Twelfth House shows where hidden matters, private struggles and the need for retreat lead in your life. This book uses the classical rulers, with the modern ruler of Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces as a second opinion. From the Twelfth House, the four houses that cannot see it are the Eleventh, First, Fifth and Seventh.

The Twelfth House beyond the birth chart

Natural significators

  • Saturn, which rejoices in the Twelfth, is the natural significator of confinement, sorrow, solitude and long trouble.

  • Neptune, in modern astrology, is the natural significator of dreams, imagination, the unconscious, and dissolving boundaries.

Derived houses

  • Counted from the Tenth House, the mother in traditional astrology, the Twelfth is the third: the mother's brothers and sisters. It mirrors the Sixth, which holds the father's.

  • Counted from the Seventh House, the partner, the Twelfth is the sixth: the partner's work and health.

  • Counted from the Fourth House, the father, the Twelfth is the ninth: the father's beliefs and travels.

Horary astrology

In horary astrology the Twelfth covers hidden enemies ("Is someone working against me?"), secrets, imprisonment and confinement, and in Lilly's day stray or stolen horses and cattle.

Mundane astrology

In charts for nations, the Twelfth House covers prisons, hospitals and institutions, secret services and hidden plots, charities, and the hidden troubles of a nation.

Electional astrology

Electional astrologers usually try to keep important planets out of the Twelfth when starting anything they want to succeed openly. For a retreat, a period of rest, or quiet research, a well-placed Twelfth House ruler is a help.

When the Twelfth House switches on

The timing methods are explained in Chapter One. Here they are applied to the Twelfth House.

Profection years

The Twelfth House is activated in the year beginning on your birthday at these ages:

11, 23, 35, 47, 59, 71, 83, 95

In those years the hidden side of life comes forward: rest and retreat, private work, and matters that have been building out of sight. They are the last year of each twelve-year cycle, before the profection returns to the First House, so they read naturally as years for finishing, clearing and preparing. In the example chart, with Virgo on the Twelfth, the lord of the year is Mercury.

Transits through the Twelfth House

  • Jupiter (about a year): help from unseen sources, rest and recovery, and quiet good fortune.

  • Saturn (about two and a half years): a period of withdrawal, hard private work, facing fears, and clearing up the past before Saturn crosses the Ascendant.

  • Uranus (about seven years): sudden insights, unsettling changes behind the scenes, and breaking free of old patterns.

  • Neptune (about fourteen years): spiritual searching, sensitivity, and a need for retreat; sometimes confusion.

  • Pluto (twelve to thirty years): deep inner change, often hidden from others while it happens.

The example chart through the years

In the 1955 Bangor chart the Twelfth House is Virgo and holds one point: the Part of Fortune, at 15°43′ Virgo. The Part is explained in the worked example below. For timing, the main events are the planets that crossed it.

Calculated with astronomy-engine 2.1.19 for the example chart; dates accurate to within a few days. Short retrograde gaps are merged. Small dots are Jupiter's and Saturn's passes over the Part of Fortune. Neptune has not reached Virgo in this lifetime.
  • Pluto was in Virgo from 1956 to 1972, from infancy to the age of 16, and crossed the Part of Fortune between November 1964 and August 1965. Uranus was in Virgo from 1961 to 1969, ages 6 to 13, and crossed the Part between September 1965 and June 1966.

  • In between, the two planets met each other. Uranus and Pluto came together in Virgo on 10 October 1965, 5 April 1966 and 1 July 1966, at 17°10′, 16°28′ and 16°07′ Virgo, all within about a degree and a half of this chart's Part of Fortune. A Uranus–Pluto conjunction happens roughly once every century and a quarter, and astrologers link this one with the upheavals of the mid-1960s. Everyone born in late 1955 with a Part of Fortune near this degree shared it, so it says more about the times this person grew up in than about them alone. For this chart, it happened inside the Twelfth House, between the ages of nine and ten.

  • Saturn was in Virgo from 1978 to 1980 (ages 22 to 24) and from 2007 to 2010 (51 to 54). It crossed the Part of Fortune on 30 August 1979, in the age-23 profection year, the Twelfth House's own year, and again between October 2008 and June 2009.

  • Jupiter passes through Virgo about every twelve years. Its next visit begins in August 2027, and it reaches the Part of Fortune on 9 October 2027, inside the age-71 profection year, the next Twelfth House year, which begins this November.

  • Neptune has not entered Virgo in this lifetime.

Worked example: Bangor, 16 November 1955

The example chart is read here with the eight steps from the contents page, for the last time in this book. The Twelfth House holds no planets, but it does hold one of the most important points in traditional astrology, and that changes the tone of the whole reading.

Step 1: the sign on the house

With Libra rising, the Twelfth House is Virgo. Virgo on the Twelfth suggests quiet, careful work behind the scenes, service given without fuss, a talent for research, and worries that are practical and detailed and mostly kept to oneself. Virgo is Mercury's own sign and also its sign of exaltation, so the house's ruler is strongly tied to it.

Step 2: planets and points in the house

There are no planets, under whole sign houses or Placidus. But the house holds the Part of Fortune, at 15°43′ Virgo.

The Part of Fortune (in Greek, the Lot of Fortune) is a calculated point. In a night chart it is found by taking the distance from the Sun to the Moon and counting it back from the Ascendant (Ascendant + Sun − Moon); in a day chart the formula is reversed. Hellenistic astrologers treated it almost as a second Ascendant, a point for the body, health and material fortune: the things that happen to a person, as opposed to what they choose.

In the Twelfth House, Fortune sits in a place that cannot see the Ascendant. Traditionally that suggests good fortune that works out of sight: luck that arrives through private work, quiet effort or unseen help, rather than through public display. It also means the Twelfth House in this chart is not only a place of trouble. Something valuable is kept here.

There is a near miss as well. Jupiter sits six minutes from Virgo and, as Chapter Six noted, crossed into it about 25 hours after this birth. A day later, the great benefic would have been in this house too.

Step 3: the partner house

Directly opposite, the Sixth House (Pisces) is empty, as Chapter Six found. Both ends of the service-and-retreat axis are quiet, so they are read through their rulers: Jupiter for the Sixth and Mercury for the Twelfth.

Step 4: the ruler and where it sits

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, at 12°23′ Scorpio in the Second House. So the ruler of the 12th is in the 2nd: hidden matters and private work are linked with money and resources. Work done quietly, alone or behind the scenes can turn into earnings. The Second sees the Twelfth by sextile, a friendly contact.

Mercury is also the ruler of the Part of Fortune, because it rules the sign the Part falls in, and it sextiles the Part by degree (3°21′). So the planet that governs Fortune sits in the house of money and looks back at Fortune in an easy aspect. Mercury rules the Ninth House as well (Chapter Nine): learning, writing and the search for meaning feed the same channel.

Step 5: the condition of the ruler

As Chapters Two and Nine found, Mercury is neutral in Scorpio and about ten and a half degrees from the Sun, under the Sun's beams: a private, probing mind that works out of sight. That suits a Twelfth House ruler well.

Step 6: natural significators

  • Saturn, which rejoices in the Twelfth, sits in the Second House, conjunct the Sun, and sees the Twelfth by sextile. Hidden burdens are handled through steady, practical effort, and private work is taken seriously.

  • Neptune, the modern significator, sits at 28°53′ Libra in the First House, next door to the Twelfth and unable to see it. The imaginative, idealistic side that Neptune describes is part of the person's open character rather than kept in the back room.

Step 7: derived houses

Counted from the Tenth (the mother, traditionally), the Twelfth is the third: the mother's siblings. Its ruler is Mercury. Chapter Six found the father's siblings in the Sixth, ruled by Jupiter. Traditionally, the two sides of the family are described by two different planets.

Step 8: timing

The profection years are 11, 23, 35, 47, 59, 71 and 83, with Mercury as lord of the year. Saturn crossed the Part of Fortune in the age-23 year. The great Uranus–Pluto conjunction of 1965 and 1966 fell on the Part of Fortune, inside this house, between the ages of nine and ten. The next Twelfth House year begins on the seventy-first birthday, in November 2026, and Jupiter reaches the Part of Fortune within it, on 9 October 2027.

Putting it together

The hidden side of this life is careful, practical and private (Virgo), and largely constructive: work done quietly and alone tends to turn into resources (Mercury, the ruler, in the Second). Good fortune itself is kept in this house (the Part of Fortune in Virgo), working out of sight rather than in public, and it is governed by the same private, probing Mercury, which looks back at it in friendly aspect. Burdens are handled with steady effort (Saturn sextile the house). The imaginative side is not hidden at all but worn openly (Neptune in the First). The coming Twelfth House year, from November 2026, brings Jupiter to the Part of Fortune in October 2027.

What this example adds

This last chapter adds the Part of Fortune, the most widely used of the traditional lots, and shows that a house with no planets can still hold something important. It also brings the book full circle. The Twelfth is the house just before the First, the place the rising sign has just left behind. Read the chart again from the Ascendant, and every house in it now has its own chapter.
